I’ve heard about this book for awhile now. I kept seeing the excerpts for it all over the place and was thinking I gotta check this book out.  Now months later I finally sit down to read it and my first thought is damn what took me so long.

Roxie is sent to spend the Summer before her senior year in some podunk town in South Carolina with her Grandma Betty.  Roxie who comes off throughout the beginning as a spoiled rich kids thinks this is some sort of punishment.  She doesn’t even know this lady and as far as Roxie is concerned Grandma Betty abandoned them a long time ago.  I feel sorry for Roxie because I know how angry she is with her parents over this but at the same time I also feel sorry for Betty cause Roxie doesn’t really give her a chance in the beginning.  She’s a brat!!!

Chase (swoon worthy) and his brother Brian are “honorary” members of Grandma Betty’s family.  Due to something that happened in their past she is very protective of them.  This causes problems for her relationship with Roxie at times who feels that her Grandmother is choosing Chase over her.  Chase is attracted to Roxie from the beginning but she doesn’t make it easy.

I laughed, cried, cheered, and yelled while reading this book.  At times Roxie made me so frustrated I just wanted to shake her and tell her it’s time to grow up and put your big girl panties on already!!!!  What’s life without a few chances and that’s something that Roxie needs to learn.  Will she learn to take those chances with Grandma Betty, Chase, Brian, and her neighbor Katy?

I originally received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.  After reading it though and experiencing so much emotion and passion for the characters and their stories I had to go out and purchase it.  This a must read for all book lovers out there.  Thank you Ruthi Knight for such a refreshing and wonderful read.  Congrats to you on writing one of the best debut YA novels I’ve read in a long time.  I look forward to reading more from you.

Title- Hidden Falls
Series- Knotted Roots # 1.5 (Novella)
By – Ruthi Kight
Publication Date- July 3, 2013
Genre- YA Romance

The southern summer was back with a vengeance.
Helping out a friend was what Katy had in mind when she agreed to give Roxie a hand on the farm.
She expected it to be an easy job wrapped in the possibility of a break from her mother’s constant vodka stupor.
What she didn’t expect was to find him.
Brian spent his life in his brother’s shadow, constantly falling short of others’ expectations.
When he gets the chance to prove himself, he’s forced to decide if there’s more to him than just the mistakes he’s made.
The summer was supposed to be easy.
It was supposed to be fun.
But sometimes, when you least expect it…you fall.

I received an ARC of this in exchange for my honest review. After reading Knotted Roots by Ruthi Knight I had to buy this book. Mainly because I was hoping to find out more about what happened with Roxie and Chase after the first book ended.  (Knotted Roots left me with a book hangover.)  I wasn’t disappointed.  This book pretty much takes up where the first book left off.

We do get to see Roxie and Chase through out this story but they are more on the back burner in this book.  This novella centers more around Brian and Katy and their story.

Brian has had feelings for Katy since they were young.  She never realized because she’s always had a thing for Chase.  Now that Chase is dating Roxie and they are in love Brian is hoping he will have a chance with Katy.

Katy agrees to help out her best friend Roxie and run the farm for her for two weeks.  Roxie’s parents are coming in to town to visit and she has her hands full with them.  When she agreed she didn’t know that Brian would be helping her run the farm for two weeks.  Chase also has taken two weeks off to help Roxie with her parents visit.  Brian loves to pick on Katy and she finds him to be annoying.  Their banter back and forth is great I love it!!!

Brian’s past and Katy’s present situations are both tragic and sad.  A tragic car accident late one night claims the life of Brian and Chase’s father.  Years later Brian is still fighting the demons inside from that night.  Katy on the other hand is trying to deal with her mother who has a serious problem of her own and her issue with her dad not being around so that he doesn’t have to deal with his wife’s problem.

I don’t want you to think this book is all about sadness because it isn’t.  Just like the first book in the series this book also has plenty of laughter and cheering to go along with the tears.  Once again Ruthi has nailed it out the park with this novella.  She continues to prove that she knows what her readers want.  She pulls you so far into the story that you feel like you are a part of it.  You can’t help but connect to each of the characters,  My only problem with this book and the first one is the series is when I got to the end and I had to put them down.  I will be recommending this book to all my book lovers and can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
